The Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations Ministry’s National Occupational Health and Safety Services is currently investigating the tragic drowning of a 50-year-old Japanese tourist at the Fiji Hideaway Resort in Sigatoka, which occurred on November 4. The incident took place around 8:00 am while the tourist was swimming alone.
Initial investigations highlight the necessity to evaluate whether the resort has adequate safety systems and procedures in place for guest activities. This includes proper supervision, as well as established rescue and evacuation protocols. To assist with the investigation, the National Occupational Health and Safety Services is working closely with authorities to acquire medical and autopsy reports from the Fiji Police Force.
Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh emphasized the resort’s responsibility to identify potential hazards and establish effective control strategies to avert similar incidents in the future. He noted, “The hotel management must adequately identify all potential hazards and implement appropriate control strategies to prevent similar incidents in the future.” A comprehensive report will be released upon completion of the investigation.
In addition, the National Occupational Health and Safety Services routinely conducts inspections of workplaces, including resorts, to guarantee compliance with safety regulations, issuing enforcement notices where violations are found.
It is essential for resorts and similar establishments to take this situation seriously, reflecting on safety protocols and ensuring a safe environment for all guests. As investigations unfold, there is hope that this unfortunate incident will lead to improved safety measures in Fiji’s tourism sector, ultimately safeguarding visitors and preventing future tragedies.
