Elina Drikibau, the captain of Fiji’s Baby Pearls netball team, has overcome significant challenges in her sporting career over the past two years. The 20-year-old faced two serious injuries, including a torn ACL in 2023, which put her netball aspirations at risk. After enduring eight months of rehabilitation, she returned to the court just in time to be selected for the Baby Pearls at the World Cup Qualifiers in the Cook Islands. However, her journey took another difficult turn when she ruptured her ACL again in late 2024, requiring further surgery.

Despite the setbacks, Drikibau credits the unwavering support from her family and community for helping her stay motivated during her recovery. “It’s my support system. My parents, my aunts and uncles played a really big role in my recovery process. But yes, there were days where you just want to give up,” she shared, highlighting the emotional weight of her journey.

Drikibau made her international debut at the Netball World Cup in 2023 as the youngest member of the Fiji Pearls squad. Now, she is leading the Fiji Baby Pearls in an upcoming Invitational Tournament in Suva, where she is expected to showcase her leadership skills and tenacity on the court. Her efforts are being closely watched, with expectations that she will secure a position in the final squad for the Netball World Youth Cup, set for September.

The recent progress of Drikibau is emblematic of a larger trend within Fijian netball, showcasing resilience and talent among young athletes. As noted in previous reports about players like Tokasa Tuisovivi and Alisi Neisulu, there is a strengthening pool of talent in Fiji, preparing for global competitions. These athletes embody the hope and commitment that underline the future of netball in Fiji.

The Fiji Baby Pearls are not only poised to make an impact on the international stage but also serve as role models for the next generation of players, proving that with dedication and support, dreams can be pursued even in the face of adversity. Their collective commitment underscores a hopeful future for netball in the region, illustrating how perseverance can lead to success both on and off the court.
