Despite the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, 23-year-old Crystal Nivedita Shobha from Nabua remained undeterred in her pursuit of education. Recently, she graduated from the University of the South Pacific with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Biology, marking a significant milestone in her academic journey.
Crystal expressed her excitement about graduating during a challenging time. “Graduating after COVID-19 feels extra special,” she shared, reflecting on the long journey and the support she received along the way. Throughout her time at the university, she built meaningful relationships within the Tongan community in Fiji, which has become a source of love and encouragement for her.
“I want to give a special shout-out to my friends in Tonga,” Crystal said, acknowledging the presence of her friends who flew in to celebrate her achievement. She emphasized the impact that her teachers and friends in high school had in nurturing her passion for science. “I was always passionate about science. Biology came naturally to me because it helped me understand why things happen—the reasons behind everything,” she explained.
Crystal is realistic about the job market for science graduates in Fiji, admitting that opportunities are limited. Currently, she is employed at her father’s company while actively seeking positions that align with her education. “It’s not what I studied for, but I’m learning a lot,” she noted, vowing to continue her search for science-related opportunities.
Looking ahead, Crystal has ambitious plans, stating, “I plan to pursue my MBA next year.” She is eager to take on new challenges and broaden her knowledge, believing that this next step could open up further possibilities.
When asked for advice for current students navigating their studies at USP, her message was straightforward. “The journey will be hard, but if you have the support of your friends and family, you’ll find the motivation and commitment to get things done.” She attributes her success to her supportive parents, declaring, “I couldn’t have done it without them.”
As she embarks on a new chapter in her life, Crystal remains passionate about science, maintaining her resilience and curiosity for the future. For now, she is savoring the moment, celebrating her achievements with those who have supported her throughout her journey.
