At 65 years old, Sabra Begum stands as a beacon of resilience and commitment, continuing her cherished role as a vegetable vendor at the Lautoka Municipal Market, where she has served the community for thirty years. Residing in Wairabetia, just a few kilometers from Lautoka City, Sabra plays a vital role in supporting her husband and youngest son while her four daughters have created their own families. Following the passing of her in-laws, she dedicated herself to managing the family stall, especially as her husband faces health challenges. Sabra’s prudent approach to finances is reflected in her statement, “I only buy what I can afford,” demonstrating her ability to adapt to changing economic conditions.
Previously earning around $140 to $150 weekly, she was able to ensure her children’s education. Now, with a keen awareness of the current economic landscape, she opts for smaller quantities of vegetables, minimizing waste while still meeting her family’s necessities. To supplement her stall, Sabra also tends to a small garden at home, providing fresh produce for both her family and her stall.
As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, her routine shifts, with early mornings starting at 3 am dedicated to preparing meals for her husband, underscoring her commitment to family life. Despite family encouragement to retire, Sabra finds joy and purpose in her work. “I do this mainly to pass time. With whatever little we make, we are able to buy the things we need,” she states, reflecting the satisfaction that comes from staying active.
