Heleina Young, the national sprinter from Fiji, expressed immense gratitude for being selected to represent her country at the upcoming Pacific Mini Games in Palau, scheduled for June 29 to July 9. After a six-year break from athletics, during which she played rugby for the Queensland Reds and the Fijiana 7s team, Young is eager to return to the track.

Despite the challenges she has encountered during her transition back from rugby, including adjustments to the individualism of track and field, Young remains focused on her goals. “Of course, competition is always tough, and we always expect the best from all the athletes, regardless of where they are from,” she remarked, emphasizing her commitment to giving her best without succumbing to pressure.

Midway through her athletic journey, Young underwent significant rehabilitation for a knee injury that temporarily sidelined her rugby career. It was through this process that she rediscovered her passion for running, thanks in part to the support and guidance of her long-time coach, Bola Tafo’ou. Her determination to return to competition aligns with a broader trend within Fiji’s athletic community, where many athletes are overcoming their setbacks with renewed zeal.

Young, hailing from Nakoronawa in Kadavu with maternal roots in Rotuma, shared her excitement about the upcoming games, viewing them as an excellent opportunity to inspire other young athletes. “I’m grateful for the support from my family and friends during this journey,” she added, acknowledging how crucial their encouragement has been.

Her anticipated performance at the Mini Games not only symbolizes her personal journey of resilience but also reflects the growing enthusiasm and support for athletics in Fiji. With athletes like Young making comebacks, there is a hopeful narrative emerging about the future of Fijian sports on an international stage, where the spirit of perseverance is being passed down to future generations.

Overall, Young’s return to athletics is demonstrating the power of resilience and highlighting how pivotal support networks are in pursuing sporting aspirations. With many young athletes gearing up for the Mini Games, there’s a collective sense of excitement and optimism surrounding Fiji’s representation in athletics.
