At 65 years old, Sabra Begum exemplifies the spirit of resilience as she continues her work as a vegetable vendor at the Lautoka Municipal Market, a role she has cherished for three decades. Introduced to this profession by her in-laws, Sabra maintains the same infectious smile for her customers that she did on her very first day.
Living in Wairabetia, just a few kilometers from Lautoka City, she supports her husband and youngest son while her four daughters have established their own families. After the passing of her in-laws, Sabra took it upon herself to continue running the family stall, especially as her husband faces health issues.
“I only buy what I can afford,” she says, illustrating her careful management of expenses. She previously earned around $140 to $150 a week, allowing her to put her children through school. Now, she has adapted her purchasing habits to suit the current economic climate, often opting for smaller quantities of vegetables to reduce wastage and ensure her family’s needs are met.
In addition to market sales, Sabra cultivates a small backyard garden, providing fresh produce for both her family and her stall when market supply runs low. As Ramadan approached, she adjusted her routine to awaken at 3 am to prepare meals for her husband, showcasing her dedication to family life.
Even as her family encourages her to consider retirement, Sabra remains committed to her work. “I do this mainly to pass time. With whatever little we make, we are able to buy the things we need,” she reflects, emphasizing the joy she finds in staying active and engaged.
Sabra’s journey echoes the experiences of other vendors in the region, such as Lenisa Vurusa, who also balances her dedication to family and her role in the market, aiming to secure a better future for her children. Both women exemplify the strength and tenacity that many market vendors display, underlining a shared commitment to their families and communities.
As Sabra looks forward to the future, her story serves as a reminder that hard work and dedication can lead to personal fulfillment, irrespective of age. The spirit of community and support fostered by such vendors highlights the essential role they play in the fabric of society.
