Resilience in the Face of Adversity: Uday Singh’s Inspiring Journey

Uday Singh, a 65-year-old resident of the Sakoca settlement in Tacirua, represents resilience and determination in the face of adversity. After undergoing an amputation of his leg last December due to complications from diabetes, Singh has remained committed to operating his vegetable stall at the local market.

Having initially assisted in a stall for eight years, he took ownership four years ago, building a small business that he now cherishes. His health challenges began in 2019 when he was diagnosed with diabetes, which escalated after a toe injury led to severe infection that threatened his life.

“I was devastated when the doctors informed me that my leg would have to be amputated to prevent the poison from spreading,” Singh recalled, expressing the profound sadness he felt. “I feared becoming a burden to my family.”

Following his surgery, Singh struggled with negative thoughts during his recovery period from December to August. Eventually, he resolved to return to his business, finding purpose once again. He credits his daughter, who took over the stall after completing high school, for her dedication and sacrifices during his healing process. His wife, who provided constant care and support, also contributed significantly to his recovery and the family business.

Although it took some time for his family to adjust to his new circumstances, Singh feels immense gratitude for their unwavering support. He noted that purchasing a piece of land and building a home helped diminish his anxiety, surrounded by loved ones who care for him.

Singh’s life has dramatically changed; he has gone from being a self-sufficient individual to relying on a wheelchair. He shared, “It’s been traumatic. I understand why some may struggle and even contemplate ending their lives, as the hardships we face are difficult to articulate, and it takes immense courage to find joy again.”

Despite a joyful childhood, Singh and his siblings faced separation after their parents’ passing. Reflecting on his work history, he shared highlights from his career starting at 19 at Chute Poultry, moving on to a shop assistant role in Lami before establishing himself at the Suva market in 2007.
