Spread the love

Uday Singh, a 65-year-old resident of the Sakoca settlement in Tacirua, embodies resilience and determination in the face of life’s challenges. After undergoing an amputation of his leg in December of the previous year due to complications from diabetes, Mr. Singh has not let this setback deter him from his daily routine. He continues to manage his vegetable stall at the market, a business he has operated for four years after working as an assistant for eight years.

Mr. Singh’s health issues began in 2019 when he was diagnosed with diabetes. Following a cut on his toe that led to a severe infection, doctors advised him that amputation was the only option to prevent the infection from spreading. The news was heartbreaking, as he feared he would become a burden to his family.

Since the amputation, Mr. Singh has struggled with negative thoughts and feelings of depression during his recovery. However, he credits his daughter for stepping up to run the stall while he healed and expresses profound gratitude to his wife, who has supported him through sleepless nights and helped care for his needs.

Though the adjustment has been difficult for the family, Mr. Singh appreciates the support he has received. He reflects on the positive impact of having built his own home on a piece of land, providing a supportive environment that eases some of his pain.

His life has changed drastically, transitioning from a lively, independent individual to someone reliant on a wheelchair. He acknowledges the trauma of this transformation and empathizes with those who struggle to cope with similar situations, understanding why some may feel hopeless.

Recalling his childhood, Mr. Singh shares that despite the challenges after losing his parents, he found joy in farm life and began working at a young age. After various jobs, he has found his place at the Suva market, where he continues to persevere, showing that hope and determination can thrive even in the face of adversity.
