Monica Ting, a dedicated young woman, exemplifies selflessness by consistently placing others’ needs before her own. At just 22 years old, she is on a path of self-discovery while achieving commendable academic success. A recent graduate of the University of the South Pacific, Monica comes from a large family with ten siblings and diverse cultural roots, with her mother originating from Salia, and her father having connections to both Buca Village in Natewa and Guangzhou in China.

Growing up in Labasa, Monica recalls fond memories of spending holidays on her family’s farm in Savusavu. Her father, a diligent farmer, motivated his children to excel academically by promising exciting rewards for top performers. This encouragement inspired Monica to work hard and achieve excellent grades during her schooling.

Monica attended St Johns College in Cawaci, Ovalau, where she initially aspired to become a teacher. However, her dream shifted to pursuing a career in medicine by the time she was ten. After high school, she applied to both Fiji National University for a medical program and the University of the South Pacific for a Bachelor of Science degree. While waiting for her admission to FNU, Monica chose to advance her studies at USP, believing that challenges often lead to unforeseen opportunities.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Monica completed her coursework online while staying in Vanuan Levu. Unfortunately, she faced another obstacle when her home tragically burned down. Despite these hardships, she found solace with her cousin, Dr. Maria Ting, and relied on prayer for strength throughout these trying times.

Graduating from university brought a surge of emotions for Monica—an event marked by joy and reflection. Though her parents couldn’t attend the ceremony, she cherished the presence of her siblings and close friends who supported her throughout her educational journey. Looking ahead, Monica envisions teaching in either a laboratory or classroom setting within the next five years and aspires to travel internationally.

Monica’s story is an inspiration to the younger generation, as she emphasizes the importance of being driven by sound principles in decision-making. Her advice resonates with the idea that every choice reflects individual priorities, with a strong emphasis on placing faith in God above all.

This narrative not only highlights Monica’s resilience and determination but also serves as a reminder of the importance of community support and faith during challenging times. As her journey continues, many will undoubtedly be inspired by her unwavering commitment to education and her ambition to uplift those around her.
