Despite the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, 23-year-old Crystal Nivedita Shobha from Nabua remained determined to pursue her education. Recently, she graduated from the University of the South Pacific with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and Biology.
“The experience of graduating after COVID-19 makes it feel even more special,” Crystal expressed. “It’s been a long journey, and I am truly thankful for all the support I received along the way.”
During her time at USP, Crystal found a sense of community and support among her fellow students from the Tongan community in Fiji. “I want to give a shout-out to my friends in Tonga,” she shared appreciatively. “Many of them flew in to celebrate with me today, and it means everything to me.”
Her passion for science was cultivated during her high school years, thanks to her teachers and friends. “Biology came naturally to me because it allowed me to understand the reasons behind various phenomena. I pursued science to satisfy my curiosity,” she explained.
Crystal acknowledges the challenges she faces in the field of science in Fiji, noting, “There aren’t many job opportunities in science here.” Currently, she is employed at her father’s business while searching for positions that will utilize her qualification. “Though it’s not directly related to what I studied, I am learning a lot,” she remarked. “I plan to keep working until more science-related opportunities come up.”
Looking to the future, Crystal is eager to further her education by pursuing an MBA next year. “I’m looking forward to new challenges and expanding my knowledge, and who knows where that could lead me?” she said.
Her resilience in overcoming obstacles serves as an inspiration to others. When asked for advice for students still navigating their studies at USP, Crystal encouraged them to lean on their support systems. “The journey will be tough, but with the support of friends and family, you’ll find the motivation to persevere,” she advised.
Crystal is grateful for the unwavering support of her parents. “I could not have achieved this without them,” she stated. “My friends and family were there every step of the way, encouraging me during tough times and celebrating my victories.”
As she embarks on a new chapter in her life, Crystal remains motivated by her love of science and is optimistic about her future. Though uncertain, she believes her resilience and curiosity will propel her toward greater achievements. For now, she is taking the time to celebrate her accomplishments with those who stood by her throughout her journey.
