Residents of Boca, Bulileka in Labasa are voicing their concerns over persistent flash floods attributed to inadequate drainage in their neighborhood. Local resident Jai Karan, 57, has expressed frustration over the Fiji Roads Authority’s (FRA) failure to address this issue, despite repeated requests made over the past quarter-century for proper drain maintenance.

According to Mr. Karan, the congestion of drains has consistently led to flooding, which disrupts the Boca Loop Circular Road. During heavy rains, this situation forces drivers to navigate hazardous conditions to access their workplaces or Labasa Town. The community, located just a few kilometers from Labasa, not only faces inconveniences caused by flooding but also significant health risks.

Vakaruru Cavuilati, the Divisional Health Inspector for Northern regions, has issued a warning to residents about the dangers posed by improperly disposed household waste that contributes to drain blockages and elevates the likelihood of flooding. He highlighted the heightened risk of diseases such as leptospirosis, typhoid, dengue, and diarrhea in flooded areas.

The Boca residents are calling for immediate action to resolve flooding issues and safeguard the community against further disturbances and health crises. Their persistent advocacy demonstrates community resilience and the importance of collaboration with local authorities to create safer living conditions.

This article highlights the essential need for better infrastructure and prompt governmental response to community needs. It’s a reminder of the importance of public health and safety and serves as an appeal for collective action to address these challenges. With a proactive approach, the residents can hope for improvements that will enhance their living conditions and prevent future floods.
