Restoring lives through education and rehabilitation is transforming Fiji’s justice system, garnering international recognition. The country’s Yellow Ribbon Programme, which focuses on the rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates, has been honored with the prestigious Commonwealth Access to Justice Innovation Award.

This accolade reflects a significant shift towards restorative justice methodologies, moving away from punitive practices. AAG Siromi Turaga, who chaired a recent meeting on justice reform, emphasized the need to listen to the voices of inmates when crafting policies and initiatives. He remarked that the personal stories shared during the meeting were both impactful and deeply moving.

Turaga proudly announced the award, noting its significance for the Yellow Ribbon Programme’s mission to promote education for inmates. He recounted a compelling testimony from a former police officer who had received a life sentence yet was given a chance to pursue education while incarcerated. This individual’s journey serves as a powerful example of the potential for change when inmates are provided with opportunities for learning.

Professor Luis Franceschi highlighted the shared commitment among meeting participants to discuss justice reform aimed at improving the lives of citizens within the Commonwealth. He pointed out that the discussions sought tangible solutions that resonate on a human level.

The recognition of the Yellow Ribbon Programme underscores the importance of a human-centered approach to justice, where education and rehabilitation are seen as essential tools for empowering individuals and enhancing societal strength. This initiative not only benefits the inmates but also promotes a more compassionate and effective justice system, paving the way for a more hopeful future for those affected by incarceration.
