Seventeen derelict vessels in Suva Harbour are set to be removed within a year, thanks to the launch of the Jonathan Smith Derelict Vessel Removal Fund, which received a significant financial boost of $1 million from the Waitt Foundation of the United States. This initiative is not just about vessel removal; it is part of larger efforts to enhance ocean governance and support marine protection.

Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau highlighted the importance of this fund at its launch, emphasizing that it represents a major step forward in restoring the health of Suva Harbour. The targeted effort aims to eliminate high-priority derelict vessels that have long posed risks to the marine environment, as noted by Minister Tuisawau: “Together we are building a coordinated, transparent and effective response to maritime environmental challenges.”

The committee assigned to oversee the removal consists of various key agencies, including the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, and the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji. Their collaborative approach reflects a strong commitment to reducing the number of derelict vessels, which has already seen numbers decline from 44 to 35 in recent assessments.

The legacy of marine conservation champion Captain Jonathan Smith is honored through the fund, which aligns with ongoing efforts to protect Fiji’s stunning marine environments. Minister Tuisawau expressed a vision for future generations, stressing the need for collective responsibility in fostering a respectful relationship with the ocean: “Hope must be matched by action.”

With significant international collaboration and a focus on sustainable practices, the efforts surrounding the removal of these derelict vessels not only aim to improve environmental conditions but also serve to strengthen local economies and uphold the aesthetic integrity of Fiji’s maritime spaces. This endeavor signifies a hopeful trajectory towards restoring the health of the ocean, promoting both ecological preservation and economic prosperity for the Fijian community.

Overall, this initiative stands as a testament to proactive environmental stewardship, demonstrating the power of collaboration and commitment in addressing pressing maritime challenges with the potential for positive outcomes for both current and future generations.
