A total of 245 passengers were successfully rescued from the Lomaiviti Princess VII, a vessel operated by Goundar Shipping Limited, which ran aground near Moala Island in the Lau Group recently. According to the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), the vessel, which was carrying the aforementioned passengers along with 33 crew members, encountered problems when it struck the Cakova Reef.
In response to the incident, MSAF activated its emergency response protocols and collaborated with search and rescue teams to ensure the safety of individuals aboard the vessel. All passengers were safely transferred to another vessel dispatched by Goundar Shipping, with additional safety measures, including the prompt distribution of life jackets.
While all passengers have been evacuated, the crew members are remaining on the Lomaiviti Princess VII to assist with the salvage operations planned for the vessel. MSAF has assured the public that there has been no breach of the hull and no water ingress, highlighting the ship’s integrity amid the incident.
