Rescue at Sea Near Taveuni: Courage, a Stranded Launch and Three Missing Sailors

In a remarkable tale of survival, twelve men battled treacherous seas near Taveuni in an urgent attempt to tow a disabled launch carrying 16 women and a young child back to safety. This dramatic story, reported by The Fiji Times on November 2, 1976, unfolds as the group faced dire circumstances not far from home after attending a Methodist Church meeting.

The group had embarked on a 30-foot launch journey from Taveuni to Yacata, covering a distance of 50 miles. However, the vessel encountered mechanical failure in the darkness at roughly 8:30 PM, just 15 miles from their destination. With bad weather escalating around 6 PM, winds and currents began pushing the launch southwest along the coast, further jeopardizing the passengers’ safety.

As supplies dwindled, the crew shared their meager food rations, yet without fresh water, tensions rose. In a bid to signal for help, the crew used torches to flash towards the distant lights of Taveuni. As conditions worsened, three men—Joseva Kuli, Manasa Rokuro, and Matavesi—decided to venture into the sea, donning life vests to swim ashore in search of assistance. Tragically, within just a few minutes of entering the water, they disappeared from sight, leaving their companions on the launch in a growing panic.

The rescue efforts echoed a recent incident involving a group of secondary school students from Taveuni who similarly faced distress at sea after their vessel became stranded. This situation reinforced the need for stringent safety measures and highlighted community resilience in the face of maritime emergencies.

Reflecting on past maritime incidents, such as that involving fishermen from the Antwan, we see a consistent theme of bravery and solidarity among those who risk their lives at sea. These stories remind us of the importance of safety protocols and the strength of human spirit in overcoming seemingly insurmountable challenges. As new safety measures are implemented, there is hope that such harrowing experiences will become less frequent, allowing communities to focus on the joys of seafaring rather than the perils that can often accompany it.
