The Fiji Police Mpaisa task force has taken action by charging two individuals involved in a fraudulent car rental scheme that exploited the mobile money transfer app. The suspects include a 29-year-old man from Davuilevu and a 37-year-old woman from Koronivia, who allegedly created several fake Facebook accounts to advertise non-existent car rentals.
The scam came to light on September 17 when a resident from Nadi fell prey to the deceit, sending $190 through Mpaisa in what he believed was a legitimate transaction. Upon attempting to contact the individuals posing as renters, he realized he had been scammed and promptly reported the incident to local police authorities.
Both accused face serious charges, including Obtaining Financial Advantage by Deception and Dishonestly Dealing with Personal Financial Information. They are expected to appear in Nasinu Magistrates Court today.
While the situation is unfortunate, it serves as a reminder for individuals to be vigilant when engaging in online transactions. The actions of the Fiji Police highlight the importance of tackling fraud and keeping communities safe. By addressing such scams, authorities hope to deter potential fraudsters and protect citizens from similar future occurrences.
This case also reinforces the necessity for greater awareness and education regarding online safety and the risks that come with using platforms for transactions.
