A 29-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman are set to appear in the Nasinu Magistrates Court today, facing allegations of financial deception involving a mobile money transfer application. The pair, who reside in Davuilevu and Koronivia, are accused of collaborating on a rental car scam that deceived a victim from Nadi.

According to police reports, the victim sent $190 to a mobile number provided by the accused under the impression that he was paying for a rental vehicle. After the transfer, he attempted to reach the accused but soon discovered he had been scammed.

It is alleged that on September 17, 2024, the duo utilized several Facebook accounts to advertise car rental services, instructing payments to be made directly through the app. Both individuals face charges for obtaining financial advantage by deception and for dishonestly handling personal financial information.

This incident underscores the importance of vigilance when engaging in online transactions, as scams continue to thrive on social media platforms. As law enforcement attempts to crack down on these types of fraudulent activities, it serves as a reminder for potential victims to research and verify before sending money or sharing personal information.

In a hopeful turn, the legal action signifies that authorities are actively addressing financial crimes, thereby reinforcing public trust in online transaction safety. This vigilant approach may deter future scams and ultimately help protect consumers.
