Renowned Professor and Humanitarian Mourned by University

The University of Fiji’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Shaista Shameem, has announced the passing of Professor Tupeni Baba, the senior-most Professor of Education and Dean of the School of Humanities and Arts.

Professor Baba began his tenure at the University of Fiji in 2017, marked by his intellectual leadership and unwavering commitment to students and colleagues.

He was a distinguished scholar and respected humanitarian, holding significant roles in government, including Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister.

Professor Baba’s efforts towards educational reform, driven by his passion to improve Fiji’s education system, sometimes brought him into conflict with higher authorities. Nonetheless, his dedication to academic integrity and progress remained a guiding force both within the university and in the broader community.

“The University has lost a great academic, and the nation a deep intellectual. We will miss him,” said Vice Chancellor Shameem, who also extended heartfelt condolences to Professor Baba’s family, especially to his wife, Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba, Vice Chancellor of the Fiji National University.
