The Children’s Ward at Labasa Hospital has been closed for over a year due to ongoing renovations focused on upgrading the facility. Assistant Health Minister Penioni Ravunawa confirmed that the delay has primarily been caused by electrical upgrades.
To maintain care for pediatric patients during this renovation period, the hospital has temporarily relocated these patients to the TB Ward, with additional overflow arrangements made in other areas of the hospital. Ravunawa expressed optimism about the progress of the renovations, especially following the approval from Energy Fiji Ltd to resume electrical work. With all factors considered, he hopes that the ward will reopen by March, pending confirmation from the contractor and the Asset Management Unit.
The investment in Labasa Hospital’s infrastructure highlights a commitment to improving healthcare services for children in the region. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to enhance public health services, as seen with recent upgrades at St Giles Psychiatric Hospital, which are designed to refurbish and expand its services.
This positive development is a testament to the government’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and ensuring that critical services evolve to meet the community’s needs. Enhancing these facilities not only benefits pediatric patients but also strengthens the overall public health system, paving the way for better healthcare outcomes in the future.
