Remembering Zanzeer Singh: A Legend in Sports Journalism

Zanzeer Singh, a prominent sports journalist in the country, passed away at the age of 49 on Tuesday at Lautoka Aspen Hospital after battling a long illness.

His brother, Ranbeer Singh, a former journalist with Fiji TV, reflected on Zanzeer’s life, describing him as a joyous and sociable person known for organizing gatherings and events. He highlighted Zanzeer’s generous spirit.

Charlie Charters, a former rugby union official and sports marketing executive, praised Zanzeer as an exceptional reporter characterized by his humanity, integrity, and sense of humor. Charters mentioned that he would often direct news tips to Zanzeer, acknowledging his skill in crafting compelling stories.

Writer Jone Kalouniviti described Singh as a standout media figure from the western region, noting his deep understanding of sports journalism. Kalouniviti remarked on Zanzeer’s straightforward nature, recognizing that some may have misinterpreted it due to his honest approach.

Indra Singh, the news director for FBC, expressed his admiration for Zanzeer, calling him a legend among colleagues. He noted that Zanzeer’s unique storytelling methods were effective and that he was always willing to help others. Indra added that Zanzeer loved sports and enjoyed beer, and his absence will be deeply felt.

Singh was educated at Namaka Public School in Nadi, where he was classmates with former Fiji 7s rugby coach Iliesa Tanivula and Pacific Islanders hooker Joeli Lotawa, before attending Swami Vivekananda College.

His career began in 1997 as a stringer for the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation, and he went on to work with Fiji Sun and the Fiji Times, where he spent two decades.

Zanzeer is survived by his wife Rita Singh and their children Nirvana and Siddhartha Iyer. His funeral is scheduled for Saturday, with a viewing at Lautoka’s Girmit Centre before the final rites at Lovu crematorium at 1 PM.
