Waisea Mataitoga, a well-respected figure in Fiji’s rugby community, passed away on Sunday at the age of 42. His death has left a significant impact on those who knew him, particularly within the Fiji rugby family.
Former Fijiana sevens head coach, Saiasi Fuli, expressed his sorrow over Mataitoga’s passing, highlighting his passion for his work and the joy he brought to those around him. Fuli emphasized that Mataitoga was known for his infectious laughter and positive spirit, making him a beloved individual in both his professional and personal circles.
At the time of his passing, Mataitoga was serving as the manager for the SportsWorld Fiji Under-20 team. His career also included a brief tenure as the Fijiana 7s manager from late 2022 to early 2023, where he collaborated closely with Fuli. Mataitoga was a key contributor to Fiji’s rugby development program and held the proud distinction of managing the victorious Vodafone Deans Queen Victoria School U18 team.
In honor of Mataitoga, members of the Fiji Rugby staff, board members, and U20 players gathered to pay their respects. The Fiji Rugby Union expressed their condolences, noting that his loss is deeply felt across the rugby community and beyond. They extended their sympathies to his family and friends during this difficult time.
Mataitoga will be laid to rest today in his village in Nawaikama, Gau, Lomaiviti, next to his older brother, who passed away a week prior. In addition to his role in rugby, he was also a school teacher, reflecting his commitment to fostering growth and inspiration in the youth.
