As the festive season approaches, it is vital to reflect on the significance of the vulnerable Christ Child, particularly in the context of our communities. Reverend James Bhagwan, the general secretary of the Pacific Conference of Churches, emphasized the need to consider the plight of vulnerable children in Fiji.
He pointed out the harsh realities faced by many children, including those who suffer from violence and abuse, are coerced into illegal activities by family members, or endure neglect. Additionally, he highlighted the struggles of children coping with academic pressures and the hardships experienced by families due to rising living costs.
Referencing the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, Chapter 9, verse 6, Reverend Bhagwan reminded us of the hope and authority embodied in the Christ Child, who is described as the Wonderful Counselor and Prince of Peace. His reflection is rooted in the spirit of Christmas—a time that calls for compassion and remembrance of those less fortunate.
Moreover, he urged families to keep in mind children affected by climate change and political turmoil, noting the dire circumstances of women and children displaced in West Papua due to military operations. He also mentioned the lasting impacts of nuclear testing on children in the Marshall Islands, Kiribati, and Moahi Nui.
Reverend Bhagwan’s message serves as a call to action during the Christmas season, encouraging individuals to embody love through justice and positive transformation. He invites everyone to ensure the safety and well-being of children, affirm their rights to justice and salvation, and promote a culture of peace and harmony in our homes and communities.
This powerful reminder instills hope as we approach Christmas, advocating for a dedication to love and support not only for our families but also for those in dire need. May this season inspire all to embrace a spirit of goodwill, fostering peace, joy, and harmony for a brighter future.
