As the festive season approaches, families are encouraged to reflect on the essence of the vulnerable Christ Child. Reverend James Bhagwan, general secretary of the Pacific Conference of Churches, emphasizes the importance of acknowledging the struggles faced by vulnerable children within Fiji’s communities.
He highlighted the plight of children enduring violence, abuse, and neglect, as well as those coerced into illegal activities by their families. These children endure the pressures of academic systems while many parents grapple with rising costs of living, struggling to provide basic necessities such as food and shelter.
Reverend Bhagwan referenced a poignant scripture from the Book of Isaiah, which reminds us of the hope and authority found in the birth of a child. He urges families, during this season of celebration, to keep in mind the challenges posed by climate change, political unrest, and other social issues that impact children worldwide.
Particularly distressing is the situation of women and children in West Papua, who will face Christmas away from home due to military actions, and those in the Marshall Islands and Kiribati dealing with the ramifications of past nuclear testing.
He calls upon all to remember the “least among us,” advocating for justice and transformation that fosters peace and goodwill. In celebrating the birth of Christ, families are encouraged to actively express love and ensure safety and justice for all children, embodying kindness and harmony in their communities. “May your Christmas be filled with purpose and peace, as we strive for a more compassionate world in the coming year.”
This message not only highlights the significance of the holiday season but also calls for action in support of those in need, offering a hopeful perspective on collective responsibility and community care.
