Maureen Hingert, the beloved Sri Lankan actress and former Miss Universe runner-up, has passed away at the age of 88. Her death was confirmed by her daughter, Marisa Zamparelli, who shared that Hingert died from liver failure at Huntington Hospital in Pasadena, California, on June 29.
The news of Hingert’s death was first announced by fellow Sri Lankan actress Angela Seneviratne through a heartfelt Facebook post, in which she expressed condolences, saying, “May her soul rest in peace.”
Born in Colombo, Sri Lanka, in 1937, Hingert began her career in the entertainment industry at a young age. She gained fame when she won the Miss Ceylon beauty pageant in 1955 and subsequently became a distinguished representative at the Miss Universe contest, where she secured the position of 2nd runner-up. This exposure led to a contract with Universal Studios, allowing her to enter Hollywood with an uncredited role in the Western film “Pillars of the Sky” (1956).
Before moving to the United States, Hingert had already begun to make a mark in Sri Lankan cinema, appearing in various films, including uncredited roles in “Circus Girl” and “Elephant Walk,” the latter starring Elizabeth Taylor.
Hingert’s passing is a profound loss for the entertainment community, as she not only paved the way for future generations of artists but also represented Sri Lankan talent on the global stage. Her legacy continues to inspire many, showcasing the vibrancy and potential of Sri Lankan cinema internationally.
