Lavenia Volaukitoga, aged 62, has dedicated 30 years to honoring the memories of fallen soldiers, including her late husband. This Remembrance Day, she was joined by her granddaughter at the National War Memorial Grounds in Veiuto, Suva, to pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for their country.
Lavenia lost her husband on June 4, 1994, when he was tragically shot down by Hezbollah while serving on peacekeeping duties in Lebanon. Reflecting on her loss, she expressed that her faith in God sustained her through the emotional turmoil and challenges that followed. “No matter how painful it was, I chose God, and through that, I mastered enough courage to care for our children alone,” she shared.
For a decade, Lavenia raised her five children in Bua without financial support from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), supporting her family as a market vendor, which proved to be a significant struggle. It wasn’t until 2006 that she found work as a cleaner at the Queen Elizabeth Barracks office, a role she held until 2016, after which she focused on caring for her grandchildren.
Wakesa Raiwa, her 19-year-old granddaughter, expressed her pride in her grandfather’s legacy, despite never having met him. Wakesa shared her aspirations of becoming President one day, feeling fortunate to have her family’s unwavering support, especially from her grandmother.
Another attendee, Susana Veretawatini, 59, traveled each year from Naisomua, Vugalei, Tailevu to honor her husband, Corporal Lui Veretawatini, who lost his life in Sinai in 2008. She recalled the precious memories they shared and expressed her longing for both her children to be involved with the RFMF. Despite having faced hardships, Susana’s journey has instilled a sense of peace and gratitude within her.
This year’s Remembrance Day highlighted the resilience and strength of those who endure personal losses while paying homage to their loved ones, reminding us of the profound sacrifices made by service members and their families.
In a world often marked by challenges, the stories of Lavenia and Susana offer a powerful reminder of hope, strength, and community support that thrives even in the face of adversity.
