Julie Sutherland passed away on December 29, 2024, following a severe stroke at her home in Delainavesi. She was a multifaceted individual—an educator, social commentator, author, and passionate animal advocate who made significant contributions to various causes in Fiji.

As a dedicated contributor to local media, Julie was celebrated for her articulate discussions on several pressing issues, including drug abuse, government policy inadequacies, education, and animal rights. In recognition of her impactful writing, she was awarded the Letter of the Year Award in January 2021 for her letter titled “No Ribbons for Victims,” published previously in The Fiji Times.

Julie was deeply committed to education; one of her final articles, “The Magic of Sight Words,” offered guidance to parents and educators on enhancing reading skills in preschool children. Her writing resonated with many, emphasizing a clear and engaging style aimed at promoting positive societal change and human rights.

Born in Melbourne in 1956, Julie’s journey led her to Fiji in 1995, where she embraced her new home and became a citizen. After earning her Bachelor of Arts and teaching qualifications, she shared her passion for learning through her role as a teacher at International School Suva.

Her love for animals was profound, illustrated by her dog feeding programs and rescue missions that became her life’s passion. As noted by her community, her dedication to Four-Legged friends and advocacy for their rights highlighted her compassionate nature.

A tribute to Julie’s life was held on January 15, 2025, at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Suva, where friends and family gathered to celebrate her contributions and the legacy she leaves behind. In his sermon, Rev. Dr. Bruce Yeates spoke of Julie’s commitment to her community and her spiritual journey, emphasizing her character as a champion for fairness and transparency.

Julie completed her Masters in Education at Fiji National University in 2023, and her ongoing efforts included working on children’s books meant to inspire young readers in Fiji. Her efforts have not gone unnoticed, as many in the community have expressed their gratitude for her significant influence on literacy and education.

Julie will be fondly remembered by her family, friends, and countless students, with her memory enduring through the lives she touched and the many causes she championed. Her spirit as a passionate advocate, an educator, and a friend to animals will continue to inspire those who follow in her footsteps.
