Waisea Mataitoga, a beloved figure in Fiji’s rugby community, has passed away at the age of 42. His death on Sunday has left a profound impact on those who knew him, including former Fijiana sevens head coach Saiasi Fuli, who described Mataitoga as a passionate individual dedicated to his work.
Mataitoga was managing the SportsWorld Fiji Under-20 team at the time of his passing and had a brief but significant tenure as the Fijiana 7s manager from late 2022 to 2023, where he closely collaborated with Fuli. Fuli fondly remembered him as someone who brought joy and laughter to those around him, highlighting his great sense of humor and passion for his work that will be deeply missed.
He played a crucial role in the Fiji Rugby development program and held the distinction of managing the victorious Vodafone Deans Queen Victoria School U18 team. In a heartfelt statement, the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) expressed their condolences, stating that Mataitoga’s loss is deeply felt within the rugby community and beyond.
