Wainikiti Bogidrau, a prominent figure in the netball community, was laid to rest yesterday at 9 Miles in Nasinu after a heartfelt funeral service at the Centenary Methodist Church in Suva. Bogidrau, who passed away at the age of 56, was honored by numerous sporting officials and community members, including Peter Mazey, the executive chairman of the Fiji National Sports Commission, and Cathy Wong, director of women’s rugby for the Fiji Rugby Union.

Mazey described the funeral as “very moving and very emotional,” expressing his shock at Bogidrau’s unexpected passing. Wong emphasized that Bogidrau still had much to offer the sporting world, indicating a great sense of loss in her untimely departure. FASANOC president Makarita Lenoa noted that while Bogidrau’s absence leaves monumental shoes to fill, it also presents an opportunity for others to rise up within the sport.

Bogidrau’s illustrious career included serving as President of Netball Fiji from 2010 to 2020 and as a director representing Oceania on the World Netball Board. She played a crucial role in advocating for the national team’s development and led initiatives like “Friends of Netball,” which raised funds for the team’s participation in key international competitions. Her passion for the sport was evident and she actively sought competitive matches to enhance the national team’s skills.

In addition to her role in netball, Bogidrau was also recognized for her work with the Fiji National Provident Fund, where she served as acting General Manager of Human Resources. Her significant contributions extended beyond sports, fostering community development and support.

Survived by her only child, Wainikiti Zedrisha Bogidrau, her legacy continues to inspire the netball community and beyond. As tributes pour in from various netball organizations worldwide, it is clear that her spirit and dedication will resonate for generations to come.

The loss of Wainikiti Bogidrau serves as a poignant reminder of the profound impact one individual can have on their community, instilling hope and inspiring future leaders in sports. As the netball community pays its respects, it looks forward to continuing her work and honoring her memory through active participation and dedication to the sport she loved.
