Niraj Surend Prasad, who is accused of stealing an ATM card from an 86-year-old man, appeared in the Suva Magistrate’s Court and was remanded in custody. He faces a charge of theft in connection with the alleged incident involving Malakai Kauwale’s bank card, which took place on January 5.

During the court proceedings, police prosecutor Sergeant Salote Bola expressed strong objections to granting bail, citing Mr. Prasad’s previous convictions for theft and an ongoing matter involving bail absconding. The prosecution argued that releasing him on bail would pose a risk to the community.

The case was presided over by Magistrate Charles Ratakele, who noted that Mr. Prasad chose to waive his right to legal representation. The magistrate subsequently adjourned the hearing until January 12, allowing Mr. Prasad to file a formal bail application.

This case underscores the serious nature of theft offenses and the legal system’s commitment to ensuring the safety of vulnerable individuals in the community. While Mr. Prasad awaits future court proceedings, the attention on such cases highlights the importance of accountability and the protection of the elderly and other at-risk populations.
