The Public Rental Board (PRB) is actively working on relocating tenants from its Mead Road property in Nabua while assessing housing requirements for those awaiting new accommodations. Timoci Naleba, the PRB General Manager, stated that ongoing discussions with the Ministry of Housing and Community Development are aimed at securing additional housing solutions for affected tenants.
Due to safety concerns regarding several PRB buildings, immediate relocation efforts have commenced. Qualified tenants have been moved into available PRB flats, while some opted to return to their home villages, a choice facilitated by the Ministry, which has covered transportation costs. Notably, two successful relocations have already taken place.
Initial assessments have been conducted for other tenants pending housing developments, with final allocations planned through established protocols, including a barrel draw. Naleba mentioned that for tenants receiving social welfare assistance, the board is in talks with the Housing Assistance and Rehabilitation Trust (HART) about relocating some individuals to empty HART flats. While these facilities currently exist, many are in disrepair, leading to requests for repairs and discussions on maintenance and ownership arrangements.
Despite the financial and logistical challenges of upgrading and maintaining properties, the PRB is committed to working closely with the Ministry to facilitate safe and equitable relocations. This collaboration reflects a dedicated effort to address housing challenges while supporting the community’s well-being.
