A total of 61 families currently situated in evacuation centers across the Western Division received essential food rations yesterday. Apolosi Lewaqai, the Commissioner of the Western Division, specified that the focus was on providing support to evacuees in Nadi, particularly those located in Andrews Primary School, Saioni Church, Korovuto Secondary School, and the Vou Dance Group office.
Lewaqai stated, “According to our guidelines, we only provide food rations to evacuees 48 hours after their evacuation.” He confirmed that the distribution of food packages for these families was underway and aimed to be completed that day.
Moreover, he mentioned that teams were actively assessing the situation, checking homes, and monitoring residual conditions. Although the Western Division is presently enjoying sunny weather, the Fiji Meteorological Service has indicated that rain is expected later due to a lingering band of clouds over the country for the upcoming days.
“All relevant agencies have been briefed on our initial damage assessment exercise,” Lewaqai added, emphasizing that the team will prioritize detailed assessments following the disaster to understand the assistance needs of the affected communities.
This proactive response highlights the commitment of local officials and agencies to support those impacted by the recent evacuation, ensuring that families receive timely essential supplies. As communities begin to regroup and recover, ongoing assessments will play a critical role in facilitating effective aid and support, with hope for a brighter future ahead.
In summary, the focus on timely aid for those in evacuation centers shows a strong community response amid challenging circumstances, reflecting resilience and solidarity during this recovery phase.
