A traditional Fijian cultural practice is being revived that highlights the importance of maintaining ancestral connections. This initiative aims to strengthen relationships among families across generations.
In recent years, the MacDonald family from Germany and the Vunivalu lineage from Natalaira, Dawasamu, Tailevu have reconnected after several years apart. Isei Turaga, the chief of the Navunivalu clan, noted that they have been actively maintaining their ties for a significant period and only recently revisited the ancestral customs of their land.
Historical accounts suggest that prior to the 1800s, a woman from Natalaira, named Losana Soli, had married a British chief who brought her on a vessel from India to Fiji. This narrative has been passed down through various elders who have since passed away.
Tomana, a descendant of Losana living in Australia, expressed a desire to explore the locations in Fiji where their family once had connections, citing the enduring interest in the stories from their ancestors.
In the past year, another woman from Natalaira residing in Navesau shared insights about her family’s ongoing pursuit of these ancestral ties. A special gathering took place recently to celebrate and foster these connections among the Vunisea clan within the Vunivalu lineage.
During the 1800s, there were movements among families as they established their identities along lineages and clans. In recent times, efforts have been made to reconnect younger generations to their roots, especially in the Natalaira community.
Isei indicated that there have been gatherings where families have learned about the traditional connections that still exist in Fiji and recognized the importance of educating descendants about these ties.
Those arriving in Fiji from New Zealand, England, Vanuatu, Australia, and elsewhere have also been eager to reconnect during these significant events, as they share memories and learn about their heritage.
The current revival symbolizes a deeper appreciation for ancestral heritage, and families continue to seek out these connections as they honor their shared history.
