With nearly 40 years of experience at over 30 Shangri-La hotels worldwide, Mr. Lee was well-equipped to tackle this challenge, despite the tough competition in the Fijian tourism sector.

When the owners sought his help, they presented him with options to lead resorts in the Maldives or Mauritius, but he chose Fiji, believing it would be the right fit. Before arriving in Fiji, he managed the Hylandia by Shangri-La Hotel in Yunnan, China.

His decision to choose Fiji turned out to be a joyous one. Intrigued by the idea of living in a place boasting one of the happiest populations in the world, Mr. Lee embraced the local lifestyle wholeheartedly. This influenced his decision to enhance guest experiences at the resort by introducing a waterpark, a decision he considers one of the best he’s ever made.

Mr. Lee shared the story of how the waterpark came into existence, noting that it cost approximately $150,000 to set up, with a German brand being chosen for its construction. Importantly, he advocated for keeping the waterpark free for guests, contrasting it with the high fees often charged at similar attractions worldwide. This approach has proven successful, bringing more local and international visitors to the resort and enhancing repeat visits from families eager for their children to enjoy the facility.
