The Immigration Department is currently working to enhance its capacity to conduct forensic examinations of documents at border points, a need that has become increasingly pressing as modern technology allows for the creation of highly convincing counterfeit documents. Minister for Immigration, Viliame Naupoto, highlighted this issue, explaining that the department’s existing capabilities for such forensic analysis are minimal.
Naupoto emphasized the necessity of developing a robust forensic document examination capability, particularly at major entry points like airports and ports. Currently, the department relies heavily on the authenticity of documentation provided by applicants, including police and medical clearances, to assess their eligibility for entry. He expressed the urgency of building this capability, stating, “This is a capacity that we are trying to build at the ministry…especially given the big wave that is coming in.”
While acknowledging the progress made with online systems, the minister noted the importance of enhancing the analytical skills in handling applications. He stressed the need for advanced tools and trained personnel to effectively scrutinize documents and ensure that the right individuals are cleared for entry into the country.
This focus on improving document verification processes aligns with previous initiatives aimed at streamlining immigration procedures while boosting overall efficiency. Minister Pio Tikoduadua had previously announced a comprehensive overhaul of the immigration system, emphasizing a balance between user-friendliness and national security. As part of this reform, the department plans to introduce biometric systems and online platforms to simplify the process for applicants, thereby enhancing both security and service delivery.
The ongoing efforts signify a proactive approach to fortifying Fiji’s immigration system against potential security threats and ensuring that the integrity of the immigration process is maintained.
