The Child Wellbeing Centre is currently providing valuable support to 25 boys as highlighted by Lynda Tabuya, the Minister of Women, Children and Social Protection. Collaborating with Inspire Pacific, an NGO, the center has initiated a rehabilitation program in Namosi that aims to help boys transition away from a life on the streets.
Ms. Tabuya outlined the key objectives of this pilot program, which include changing the boys’ mindsets through counseling and promoting healthier social relationships. “We focus on counseling, along with encouraging the boys to surround themselves with new, positive friends,” she explained. This new social circle will provide them with opportunities for education and skill development, such as farming and other vocational activities. A critical aspect of the program is the reintegration of the boys back into their families.
The initiative also aims to tackle issues related to substance abuse, with support from St Giles Hospital and the Stress Management Board at CWM Hospital. Ms. Tabuya pointed out the necessity for a dedicated Child Drug Rehabilitation Centre that would address the clinical needs of detoxification prior to the boys entering the rehabilitation program.
To support this effort, proposals for developing such a centre are being gathered from international drug rehabilitation facilities. These will be submitted to the Cabinet following consultations with the Ministry of Health and potential donors. Ms. Tabuya acknowledged the ongoing drug crisis in the community, as evidenced by daily arrests made by the police, and emphasized that drug use is often a coping mechanism for stress. However, she urged parents and guardians to recognize that these methods are not healthy.
This initiative represents a significant step towards addressing the challenges faced by vulnerable youth and illustrates a commitment to providing them with the resources and support necessary for a brighter future. By focusing on rehabilitation and family reintegration, the Child Wellbeing Centre not only aims to break the cycle of substance abuse but also fosters a supportive environment where boys can thrive.
Summary: The Child Wellbeing Centre is aiding 25 boys in their rehabilitation through a program that includes counseling and support for healthier friendships, aiming for reintegration into families. With plans for a dedicated Child Drug Rehabilitation Centre, this initiative addresses the pressing needs of youth affected by substance abuse while promoting positive life choices and skills development.
