The Minister for Justice, Siromi Turaga, has urged parents to ensure their children’s registration at the Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) Registry before the school year begins next year. During his visit to Bua on Wednesday and Thursday, he inaugurated BDM services at various Post Fiji Shops, including Kubulau, Wainunu, Lekutu, and Nabouwalu.

Mr. Turaga emphasized the significance of registration, stating, “Every child born on this earth comes from a family, a mother, and a father,” and highlighted the responsibility of parents to officially register their children. He noted that the ministry revamped its approach by decentralizing services to facilitate easier access for families.

Officials observed that many children remained unregistered due to parental negligence, lack of awareness, or financial constraints. Mr. Turaga explained that proper registration is essential for effective policy-making, allowing the government to accurately assess the population’s size and demographics, which in turn aids in better planning for future needs.

Now, with services being more accessible, residents in the Bua region no longer need to travel to Savusavu or Labasa to register their children, promoting greater convenience and encouraging more families to participate in the registration process.

This initiative is a crucial step towards enhancing community engagement and ensuring that every child’s rights are recognized. It reflects the government’s commitment to facilitating access to essential services, ultimately paving the way for a more inclusive society.
