Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has highlighted the pressing need for reform within the Fiji Police Force, focusing on the outdated 1965 Police Act that hinders modern policing efforts. According to Tudravu, the law is not equipped to address contemporary crime challenges, which include sophisticated criminal activities that exploit existing legal loopholes.

The Commissioner emphasized that real progress in tackling crime can only be achieved through updated legislation. He noted that today’s police officers are confined to an archaic framework that limits their use of innovative technology and restricts their operational capabilities. Tudoravu stated, “Modernizing the Police Act will allow us to introduce internal mechanisms that assist in rebuilding trust and confidence, promoting expected behaviors and values among police members.”

This call for reform aligns with the “Police Reset” initiative previously introduced by former Minister Pio Tikoduadua. The initiative focuses on five key areas: structural changes within the police force, capacity building for modern policing, enhancing community engagement and trust, promoting sustainable practices, and strengthening international cooperation. These efforts aim to create a more agile and responsive police force equipped to confront emerging threats such as cybercrime and organized crime.

Moreover, Tudravu’s pursuit of legislative reform is critical in boosting public confidence in law enforcement. By overhauling outdated practices and fostering greater community trust, the Fiji Police Force can transform its operational framework and improve overall safety for citizens.

In summary, Commissioner Tudravu’s initiative for a revamped Police Act not only seeks to modernize law enforcement capabilities but also holds the promise of rebuilding public trust. As the police adapt to evolving crime patterns, the hope is for a safer, more accountable policing environment in Fiji for all its citizens.
