Sunishma Singh, the sustainability manager for Tourism Fiji, has praised the recent Vesi Reforestation Initiative and a food forest planting event conducted at Namamanuca Primary School on Yanuya Island. She emphasized that these projects showcase the remarkable outcomes possible when communities unite for a common cause.
The Vesi Reforestation Initiative, organized by Jacks of Fiji in collaboration with the Tokoriki Island Resort, the Ministries of Forestry and Agriculture, the Mamanuca Environment Society, and Tourism Fiji, aims to restore vesi wood. This wood is vital for crafting the traditional tanoa, a bowl integral to kava ceremonies, thus preserving cultural heritage while ensuring a vibrant ecosystem for future generations.
Additionally, the food forest initiative empowers children by allowing them to plant seedlings that will provide nourishment and support future agri-tourism and forestry tourism ventures. These seedlings will help sustain the community and foster a culture of sustainability among the youth.
Ms. Singh represented the importance of these initiatives, stating, “Planting these trees symbolizes a greener, sustainable future where our traditions and environment coexist harmoniously.” She highlighted the significance of community collaboration in driving positive change.
During the inaugural food forest event, local children were involved in planting fruit and timber seedlings, securing future food sources and income for the village. The event was marked by the participation of community leaders, including Taukei Yanuya Akuila Lati, Marica Vakacola from the Mamanuca Environment Society, and Ms. Singh herself.
Overall, this initiative not only reinforces cultural traditions but also establishes a pathway toward sustainability and economic growth in the region. It serves as a hopeful reminder of the impact that community action can have on both the environment and cultural preservation.
This story reflects a positive and proactive approach to environmental sustainability while promoting a sense of responsibility among the younger generation. As such initiatives gain momentum, they represent a bright future for communities that value both their heritage and the health of their natural surroundings.
