The Fiji Football Referees Association recently marked its 70th anniversary with a celebratory event at the Intercontinental Hotel in Yatule Resort on December 7. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad delivered a heartfelt speech recognizing the significant contributions of the association to the sport of football in Fiji.

Prasad praised the referees for their dedication and the vital role they play in maintaining fairness and integrity in football, both on and off the pitch. He acknowledged the foundational efforts of early figures like Mr. Ahmed Hussein, Fiji’s first FIFA instructor, and Mr. Ram Indarjit, highlighting their roles in shaping what the FFRA is today. The Deputy Prime Minister also mentioned more recent contributors such as Mr. Hari Raj Naicker, Mahendra Singh, and Samay Chandra, who have further built upon this legacy.

Reflecting on his childhood, Professor Prasad reminisced about the iconic referees who influenced his passion for football. He expressed his gratitude towards the long-term patrons of the association, namely Justice Sir Moti Tikaram and former President of Fiji, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, whose support, he stated, has been instrumental to the FFRA’s progress.

The importance of the FFRA in fostering the growth of referees in Fiji was emphasized, with Prasad noting that today’s referees are better compensated, better equipped, and held to higher standards than their predecessors. He took pride in the increasing recognition of Fijian referees on the international stage, highlighting their eligibility to officiate in regional competitions and the pursuit of the prestigious FIFA badge.

In closing, Professor Prasad celebrated the commitment and passion of the FFRA members, commending their efforts in shaping Fijian football and setting a commendable standard for the sport. The anniversary celebration not only honored the associations’ legacy but also united current and former referees, dignitaries, and football enthusiasts in appreciation of the vital role the FFRA has played in the community.

Overall, the event served as a reminder of the dedication and integrity that continues to drive the growth of football in Fiji.

This celebration represents not just a milestone but also a hopeful future for football refereeing in Fiji, emphasizing a strengthened commitment to excellence and fairness within the sport.
