Reece Thrives Under New All Blacks Coaching Team: What’s Next?

Sevu Reece, a Fiji-born winger, is thriving in the All Blacks setup under the guidance of newly appointed head coach Scott Robertson, who took over after the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France. Along with forwards coach Jason Ryan, who was part of the previous coaching staff, the team has welcomed several new assistants including Jason Holland (backs), Leon MacDonald (attack), Scott Hansen (defense), and Tamati Ellison, who focuses on contact skills. Wayne Smith also brings his experience to the group as a performance coach.

Reece, who missed the entire 2023 Test season due to an ACL injury, made a strong comeback with the Crusaders in Super Rugby Pacific. Although it was a challenging season for the Christchurch team, he managed to finish as one of the top scorers in the competition.

As the 2024 international season approaches, Reece expressed his enthusiasm for the fresh coaching lineup. “I feel fortunate to work with all these coaches, and it’s an exciting time for New Zealand rugby,” he shared on the Aotearoa Rugby Pod. He praised the men off the field and noted the dynamic nature of the current squad, which has inspired new questions around individual roles and game plans.

Within a competitive group of four wingers, including Mark Tele’a, Caleb Clarke, and Emoni Narawa, Reece acknowledged the tough competition among the speedsters. “This is going to be a challenging camp,” he said, humorously considering the possibility of playing other positions, like half-back.
