The Queensland Reds have officially announced their squad for the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific season, introducing promising Australian Under-20 talents Trevor King and Will McCulloch into the mix. This year’s team features a solid foundation, including 19 players with Test experience, notably 18 Wallabies and former All Blacks prop Jeffery Toomaga-Allen.
Among the experienced names, co-captain Tate McDermott is set to lead the squad into the new season, bringing with him a wealth of knowledge from his 91 caps with the Reds. Additionally, established Wallabies such as lock Lukhan Salakaia-Loto and outside back Filipo Daugunu have made their return as off-season signings.
New recruits including Lachie Anderson, Josh Canham, Matt Gibbon, and Mason Gordon have already begun integrating into the squad through the Reds International Program. Meanwhile, King and McCulloch, both still awaiting their debuts, reflect the club’s commitment to developing young talent, supported by the success stories of players like teenage centre Dre Pakeho who has gained invaluable experience recently playing against international teams.
Head coach Les Kiss expressed optimism about the team’s evolution, focusing on hard work as the key to success in the upcoming season. The continuing relationship between the Reds and their Academy is evident, as seen with players transitioning smoothly from youth programs to professional ranks.
Kiss highlighted the importance of players like Jude Gibbs, who has shown strong performance in the Shute Shield competition, showcasing versatility in various backline positions. Both McCulloch and King are eager to rise to the challenge that Super Rugby presents and are motivated by the paths other Academy graduates have taken.
The Reds are set to kick off their 2025 season against Moana Pasifika on February 21, following pre-season matches against Bristol and Ulster.
This renewed focus on youth and development bodes well for the franchise’s future, providing a balance of experience and new talent that may lead to exciting outcomes in the competitive landscape of Super Rugby. The journey ahead seems promising, as the Reds aim to harness the potential of their squad while fostering a vibrant playing culture.
