Bucalevu Secondary School’s under-18 rugby team is gearing up for a chance at redemption as they prepare to face Lelean Memorial School in the upcoming Vodafone Deans Trophy quarter-finals. After a disappointing exit last year, when they were disqualified despite winning their playoff match due to a breach of the competition’s Terms of Participation, the team is eager to prove their worth this time around.

Captain Paula Daugunu expressed confidence in his team’s abilities, acknowledging the formidable challenge posed by Lelean Memorial School, known for their dominance in the Eastern Zone. “No doubt they’ll give us a very tough match because they dominated their zone, and they are well known in the competition,” said Daugunu. However, he assured that his team is ready to rise to the occasion. “We’re here too for a reason, and we’re ready to do our best.”

Most of the players have fresh experience from competing in the under-17 category, further fueling their determination to succeed. Daugunu noted that his team has been committed to rigorous preparation leading up to this pivotal match scheduled for 3:40 PM tomorrow at Buckhurst Park in Suva. The game promises to be an exciting showcase of talent, with live coverage available on FBC 2.

This year’s Deans Trophy matches carry additional significance as the competition continues to serve as a thrilling platform for young athletes, fostering the next generation of rugby talent in Fiji. The upcoming matches are anticipated not only for the display of skill and sportsmanship but also for the growing presence of women’s rugby, which enhances the overall profile and excitement surrounding the sport.

With all teams looking to secure their place in the semi-finals, this weekend offers an excellent opportunity for schools to demonstrate their dedication and spirit. As the players take to the field, fans will undoubtedly be treated to an exhilarating day of rugby.
