Maryann Macedru, a standout athlete from St. Joseph’s Secondary School, has made headlines at the 50th Coca-Cola Games by setting a new record in the Intermediate Girls Shot Put. The 16-year-old exceeded her previous record of 13.27 meters, achieving an impressive throw of 14.44 meters during the competition held today.
Macedru expressed her satisfaction, stating, “I had broken the Zone record, but felt like I could do better.” Her determination shone through as she managed to break the record four times throughout the event while acknowledging that she has thrown farther in training. Grateful for the support of her coach and parents, she dedicated her win to them as well as the St. Joseph’s Athletics Club.
In the competition, Sulie Matea from Swami Vivekananda College earned the silver medal with a throw of 11.20 meters, while Miliakere Naikaci from Natabua High School took home the bronze with a distance of 10.57 meters.
Macedru’s achievements not only showcase her personal dedication but also highlight the thriving spirit of athletics within Fiji’s youth.
