Ratu Apenisa Navukitu of Nakasi High School made headlines at the Triple N Zone athletics competition, where he broke a four-year-old record in the intermediate boys long jump. His remarkable jump of 6.48 meters surpassed the previous record of 6.06 meters set by David Raibiriki. Navukitu achieved this feat on his third attempt, following jumps of 6.25 meters and 6.42 meters in his earlier tries.
Expressing his joy, Navukitu said, “I am very happy that I broke the record that was set four years ago and I would like to thank the Lord for guiding me in my progression in the long jump competition.” He emphasized the significant preparation leading up to this moment, which included intensive training and recovery sessions such as ice baths.
Navukitu’s determination and commitment to his training intensified following his school’s inter-house meet earlier in the term. He now has his sights set on the upcoming Fiji Finals, aiming to maintain his preparation levels because he recognizes the unique challenge and atmosphere that the finals will present.
His accomplishment is not isolated, as the ongoing trend of young athletes breaking records at these competitions reflects a broader culture of excellence in Fijian athletics. Similar achievements have been noted in the competitions, such as the new records set by Serevi Tova in the 3000-meter boys final and Eroni Seru in the intermediate boys 800 meters, showcasing the collective talent and determination of these aspiring athletes.
This environment of record-breaking performances invigorates the athletics community, instilling hope for future competitions while demonstrating the potential that lies within Fiji’s youth. Navukitu’s achievement serves as an inspiration to his peers, reinforcing the idea that hard work and dedication can yield incredible results.
