Record-Breaking High Jump Star: Meet Fiji’s Newest Athletic Sensation!

John Vugakoto, a sub-junior athlete from Suva Grammar School, made headlines at the Suva Zone Two competition by setting a new high jump record. At the HFC Bank Stadium, he cleared an impressive height of 1.65 meters, achieving this milestone in his first year of high school and his debut at the zone level.

Vugakoto, who began his training just two weeks prior to the event, expressed his joy in breaking the record. “It feels great to break a record in my first year at high school and also my first zone,” he stated. He attributed his success to hard work and the support from God, thanking his coach, Victor Sigavou, for his guidance.

With his sights set on the upcoming Fiji Finals on April 24, Vugakoto is optimistic about his performance and aims to surpass his recent achievement by breaking another record at the national school meet. Coming from a sporting family, he has aspirations to represent Fiji in basketball, demonstrating his diverse athletic ambitions. “It’s just something about the game that made me really interested in it,” he remarked, indicating his determination to aim for success in multiple sports.

This accomplishment aligns with the growing trend of young athletes breaking records in Fiji. Similar to high jump star Rusiate Matai, who recently set a national record, Vugakoto’s achievement exemplifies the rising talent in Fijian athletics. These young athletes inspire their peers and represent a hopeful future for sports in the country, nurturing national pride and the potential for further success in international competitions.

Overall, Vugakoto’s journey reflects the strength and spirit of Fijian youth in athletics, encouraging not only him but also upcoming athletes to pursue their dreams with determination and enthusiasm.
