Semesa Kalikalisui from Cicia High School delivered an outstanding performance in the senior boys javelin throw at the Maritime Zone athletics competition held in Suva, capturing first place with a remarkable throw of 57.86 meters. This impressive start set the tone for his competition, as he recorded a final attempt of 54.09 meters to secure his victory.

Entering the event, Kalikalisui was accompanied by two other competitors, Jonetani Taletaki from Adi Maopa Secondary School and Gabriel Vuki from Richmond High School. Throughout the event, Kalikalisui distinguished himself as the top athlete, completing his throws with distances of 53.33 meters in his second attempt, a missed attempt in the third and fourth, and a 52.0 meter throw in the fifth round. His consistent performance reflected his extensive preparation, as he committed two months of training in anticipation of this event.

Excitement fills the air as Kalikalisui prepares to compete in the Fiji Finals scheduled to take place later this week. He confidently expressed his ambition to break the javelin record, which stands at an impressive 59.69 meters. “My belief is that I will break the record, and I am confident that I will earn a win this week,” he stated with optimistic determination.

Kalikalisui’s journey to the competition has been supported by his community, and he expressed gratitude towards those who helped him along the way. “I would like to thank all those who helped me get this far and most especially the Lord,” he remarked, highlighting the importance of support from his peers and mentors.

In the broader context of the Maritime Zone meet, Vunisea Secondary School emerged as overall champions, securing a total of 20 gold medals, 10 silver, and seven bronze medallions. Kalikalisui’s victory underscores not only his personal dedication but also the emerging talent within Fiji’s young athletes, who continue to inspire hope for future successes in athletics.
