Opeti Tikoisuva from Suva Grammar School made a significant impact at the Fiji Finals, held at the HFC Bank Stadium, by breaking a decade-old record in the sub-junior boys’ long jump. The 14-year-old athlete soared to new heights with an impressive leap of 6.12 meters, surpassing the previous record of 5.84 meters established by Paula Nasara of Natabua High School in 2015.
The atmosphere in the packed stadium charged Tikoisuva with energy as he made his record-breaking jump on Day 1 of the finals. He demonstrated exceptional skill and determination, a testament to his years of dedication to the sport, which began during his primary school days.
Tikoisuva attributes a significant part of his success to the encouragement he receives from his parents, who have consistently motivated him throughout his journey. Their empowering words, “This is your sport, no one can take it from you,” have inspired him to push through challenges and strive for excellence.
In the competition, Tuluke Tiko from Ratu Kadavulevu School claimed the silver medal, and Varasiko Rokua of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School received the bronze. This year’s Fiji Finals has already seen multiple records shattered, indicating a promising future for athletics in Fiji as young talents continue to emerge.
This achievement not only highlights Tikoisuva’s talent but also reflects the broader trend of rising young athletes in Fiji, similar to other recent record-breakers such as John Vugakoto, who set a new high jump mark, and Roko Uluiburotukula, who also broke his own high jump record. The collective success of these athletes exemplifies hard work, support from their communities, and an unwavering pursuit of their sports aspirations, which fosters national pride and the hope for further achievements on international stages.
