Reconciliation in Focus: Join the National Dialogue!

Public participation is encouraged in the efforts toward national reconciliation as consultations commenced this week to develop a legal framework for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).

Sashi Kiran, the Assistant Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, is spearheading the initiative, which follows several weeks of discussions. During the initial consultation, members of faith-based organizations were joined by Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, the chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs.

Kiran acknowledged concerns regarding the perceived inactivity surrounding the initiative and questions about its progress. “The younger generation, particularly those under 35 to 40 years old, tend to show little interest in the TRC,” she noted. “Many suggest reallocating funds to health or other programs instead of pursuing this initiative. Conversely, older individuals, those over 50, express pain, trauma, and fear related to the process.”

Kiran emphasized the aim of being as inclusive as possible to ensure the framework addresses the needs of diverse societal sectors, with healing and closure as the primary objectives.

During the meeting, Raijeli Tuivaga, the director of the Law Reform Commission, and her team presented various elements of the draft. Leaders from various civil society organizations also contributed their insights for consideration in the Bill’s drafting.

Consultations will continue with various stakeholders, and there are plans to extend discussions across all divisions. Those interested in sharing their feedback can do so by submitting their views to fijilawreformcommission@gmail.com.
