Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka acknowledged that his office did not properly follow procedures when attempting to secure the participation of his predecessor, Voreqe Bainimarama, and former police chief Sitiveni Qiliho in a reconciliation ceremony held at the Queen Elizabeth Barracks. The event took place last Saturday, and during the proceedings, Rabuka requested President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere to allow the release of Bainimarama and Qiliho from the Fiji Corrections Service so they could attend.
Despite his efforts, which included asking the event organizers twice to wait for Bainimarama and Qiliho’s arrival, both former officials ultimately did not attend the gathering. Rabuka expressed regret to RFMF Commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, stating the absence of both men was unanticipated and not included in the event’s program.
He further clarified that his request should have been directed to the Fiji Corrections Service Commissioner, Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, but he chose to communicate with the President instead due to not seeing the Commissioner present. Rabuka recognized that the President did not possess the authority to release both men from prison for the event, attributing the missed opportunity to a lack of time.
This incident highlights the complexities of political processes and the importance of adhering to proper protocols. Despite the setback, it signals ongoing efforts toward reconciliation in Fiji, suggesting a willingness to address past issues and foster unity within the nation.
In a positive light, this situation can serve as a learning experience for future engagements and demonstrates Rabuka’s commitment to bringing together past leaders for constructive dialogue, which could pave the way for healing and progress in Fiji.
