The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has taken decisive action by revoking the driver’s licenses of eight individuals involved in serious fatal accidents. A notable case includes a 21-year-old truck driver who caused a tragic incident last week on Princes Road in Tacirua, resulting in the death of a 13-year-old student.
LTA CEO Irimaia Rokosawa revealed that these individuals were summoned for showcause hearings as stipulated under Regulation 30 of the Land Transport (Driver) Regulations 2000. The truck driver’s license was canceled for a period of five years due to the grave nature of the crash, especially given that he was behind the wheel with an expired Learners Permit.
Mr. Rokosawa stressed that the LTA’s actions serve as a stern warning to all drivers regarding the serious repercussions of reckless driving. He emphasized the importance of adhering to the conditions of driving licenses, asserting that negligence on the road endangers the lives of everyone involved.
“The authority maintains a zero-tolerance stance towards reckless driving,” he remarked, highlighting the LTA’s commitment to safeguarding road users. He called for personal accountability and societal responsibility in ensuring road safety, noting that even a single moment of inattentiveness can lead to catastrophic outcomes.
Addressing the increasing incidents of reckless driving, the LTA is now working closely with the Fiji Police Force to implement stricter measures against repeat traffic offenders and to review current traffic regulations. As Mr. Rokosawa mentioned, driving recklessly is deemed a summary offense under Section 268 (a) of the Crimes Act 2009, punishable by up to two years in prison.
The revocation of licenses, including that of the truck driver, is part of a comprehensive strategy to combat reckless driving, particularly as rising accidents related to speeding, inattention, and general negligence have become a pressing concern. This proactive stance sends a hopeful message: that authorities are serious about improving road safety and protecting lives through stricter enforcement of rules.
By fostering collaboration and strengthening regulations, the LTA is working towards a safer future on the roads, underscoring the shared responsibility of all drivers to prioritize safety.
